In several areas of China there have been terrible snow storms the past few days. So severe, it has killed at least 24 people.
There has not been a snow storm this bad in over five decades. The prime minister Wen Jiabao was quoted, "Due to the rain, snow and frost, plus increased winter use of coal and electricity and the peak travel season, the job of ensuring coal, electricity and oil supplies and adequate transportation has become quite severe.”
And there is more snow on the way. Trains have been postponed for three to five days and many flights have been cancelled.
Civil affairs estimates that the economic cost of this is expected to be $3.2 billion and 78 million people are going to be affected, including around 800,000 evacuees.
I thought that this article was interesting for several reasons. The first thing that popped in my mind is that I think this may have something to do global warming. For it to have snowed that bad and it hasn't happened in over 50 years is odd.
I also think that the U.S. will suffer from China's economic loss.
My question to you all is Do you think that this has anything to do with global warming and all its talk about the seasons changing drastically or do you think this is something that just happened at random?
Also, do you think the U.S. will suffer from this economically?http://www.nytimes.com/2008/01/29/world/asia/29china.html?ref=world

Poor China. I am just trying to think how it would feel if a storm were to hit Florida. Man, would we be under prepared. But the snow storm in China does sound as if it will only get worse. I personally do not know if it was due to global warming. I know there are alot of things that global warming has caused, but I do not think that it has went into effect to this extent yet. Sure we know about the polar caps melting and the canyons crumbling, but I think I'll leave it up to the scientist to determine whether this was due to global warming. Science is not my best subject.
I can not even imagine what they are going through over there. I feel like we could have gone through something simular if hurricane Katrina would have hit us. I honestly do not know if this snow storm could be due to global warming or just random. It is hard to say. It could very well be the effect of global warming. It sounds as though this is only going to get worse and I believe it could affect the United States in some way. Their economic loss has to have some affect on us. It seems as though EVERYTHING comes from China. Hopefully this snow storm will end soon and they can get back on their feet.
I think that global warming is playing a big part in the terrible snow storm that China is getting now. It is happening around the world. Last year, Florida's overall climate was between warm and humid.Worse, their way and cost of living and the people is suffering from it. I think the U.S. is going to suffer from this economically because the majority of our imports come from China. This will result in high demand but low supply. I hope that China will recover.
China is a major contributer towards the US. Seeing how we get many of our goods from them, we will suffer in some way or another. I learned a lot about global warming in biology last semester and it is sad to say but I do believe it had something to do with it. From burning all the fuels and everything in between. While it may not be the primary cause, it does have some role. Asia tends to get a lot of bad storms though from typhoons and tsunamis and now this. I am really not sure what I believe the exact cause was.
Good piece
I think that this may infact have something to do with global warming but atleast to this point, there is not scientific facts. We all know, thanks to people like Al Gore, that global warming is rising and is a very serious issue across the world. I personally think yes, there is a connection in such a wierd event that occurs once in a blue moon.
i enjoyed it
